This online module provides a brief introduction to laser technology and an overview of the requirements for the safe operation of laser equipment. This course is intended for open beam laser users, laser safety supervisors including embedded laser devices, and Principal investigators of laser labs, open beam, and embedded laser devices.

Biannual refresher training is required for open-beam laser users.

All educational, laboratory and research Laser Users, working with open beam lasers or embedded / enclosed laser systems with maximum power of 5mW or greater, must complete EH&S Laser Safety Fundamentals Training.

Principal Investigators and Personnel Owning or Responsible for: open beam lasers or embedded / enclosed laser systems with maximum power of 5mW or greater must complete EH&S Laser Safety Fundamentals Training.

UCLA EH&S laser safety training is in accordance with ANSI Standard Z136.5 – 2000 (American National Standard for Safe Use of Lasers in Educational Institutions) and is a requirement of OSHA (via the General Duty Clause).  EH&S Laser Safety classroom training is in addition to any practical training previously received from faculty or staff.

You can self-register for laser safety fundamentals at worksafe.ucla.edu.

Laser Equipment Exempt from Safety Training Requirements:

+ Laser pointers. (< 5mW and used for demonstration or presentation)

+ Laser copiers.

+ Laser computer peripherals such as CD/DVD readers/burners.
