Super El Nino
A strong El Niño may bring increased rainfall to Southern California, making it important to prepare for upcoming storm events. Taking simple steps to protect your home, vehicle, and surrounding area can help reduce flooding, prevent pollution, and safeguard community infrastructure and local waterways. By working together, we can improve campus and community resilience during severe weather.
How to Prepare
Reduce Slips and Falls
- Use a reusable absorbent umbrella sleeve to absorb excess water
- Remember your rain shoes
- Don't obstruct path ways with scooters or other obstructions
Report an Incident or Concern
Report any of the following to Facilities Management 24/7 at (310) 825-9236.
- Indoor major leaks and flooding
- Overflowing storm drains
- Sewer Overflows
Vehicle Readiness
- Check your tires: Ensure tires are properly inflated and have adequate tread. Consider replacing worn tires before wet weather arrives.
- Replace worn windshield wipers: Install new wiper blades if your current ones leave streaks, skip across the windshield, or do not clear rain effectively.
- Test your battery: Have your vehicle's battery checked to help prevent weather-related breakdowns.
Emergency Supplies and Preparedness
- Prepare a go-bag: Pack essential items such as clothing, a local map, rain gear, medications, and cash in case of evacuation or extended power outages.
- Stock emergency supplies: Keep at least 7 to 14 days of food, water, medications, and first-aid supplies available.
- Review your insurance coverage: Understand what your policy covers and consider flood insurance if your property is in a flood-prone area.
Home and Property Protection
- Clear gutters and drains: Remove leaves and debris from gutters, downspouts, and storm drains to help prevent flooding.
- Improve drainage: Ensure water is directed away from your home's foundation.
- Inspect outdoor drains: Check that catch basins and drainage systems are free of obstructions and functioning properly.
- Secure outdoor items: Bring inside or secure patio furniture, potted plants, and other loose objects before storms.
- Trim trees and remove hazards: Prune dead or weakened branches and address any trees that may pose a risk during high winds.
These simple steps can help reduce storm-related damage and improve your family's safety during severe weather events.
