Asbestos & Lead Program

The IH team supports campus construction, renovation, maintenance, and emergency response activities through oversight of asbestos- and lead-containing building materials—ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.

Services for Campus Construction & Maintenance Projects 

We provide project teams with: 

  • Pre-project hazard reviews 
  • Regulatory compliance guidance (AHERA, Cal/OSHA, EPA) 
  • Assistance interpreting building survey findings 
  • Recommendations for work practices, controls, and required notifications 

Our team conducts or coordinates: 

  • Asbestos bulk sampling of suspect building materials 
  • Lead-based paint (LBP) sampling and XRF screening 
  • Lead in building components (dust, debris, soil, or coatings) 
  • Site assessments prior to renovation, demolition, or emergency repairs 

All sampling is performed according to accredited laboratory methods and industry standards. 

Following assessment, we issue clear, actionable guidance: 

  • Abatement vs. repair/stabilization recommendations 
  • Required containment and negative air practices 
  • Waste handling and disposal requirements 
  • Protective equipment needs 
  • Clearance criteria and post-work verification 

The IH team works with Project Managers, Facilities, and contractors to: 

  • Review abatement plans 
  • Provide oversight during high-risk work 
  • Support emergency response (accidental disturbance events) 
  • Conduct post-project clearance checks
