Chemical Fume Hood Management

Our Program

Chemical fume hoods are critical engineering controls that protect researchers from hazardous chemical exposure. The IH team manages campus oversight of fume hood performance, certification, and compliance to ensure laboratories remain safe and functional.

EH&S manages the campuswide fume hood certification program, including:

  • Coordinating annual performance certifications
  • Ensuring third-party vendors follow recognized standards (e.g., ANSI/AIHA Z9.5, ASHRAE 110)
  • Tracking certification results, airflow measurements, and compliance outcomes
  • Reviewing vendor reports and verifying corrective action needs

The EH&S IH team monitors overall campus compliance and ensures hoods meet operational requirements. Our responsibilities include:

  • Identifying hoods with low or unstable face velocities
  • Flagging hoods that fail certification for corrective action
  • Communicating risk mitigation guidance to labs
  • Maintaining records of hood performance status

EH&S serves as the liaison between campus laboratories, Facilities Management, and the certification vendor to streamline response and repair efforts.

Our coordination includes:

  • Notifying labs of certification findings or needed repairs
  • Working with Facilities to evaluate mechanical issues (exhaust fans, dampers, VAV controls)
  • Scheduling post-repair recertification
  • Ensuring hoods remain locked out or labeled appropriately until safe to use
  • Supporting lab moves, renovations, or new hood installations
