Using N95 for General Voluntary Use

General Guidance

For general voluntary use (non-hazardous environments), expired N95 respirators may still be used if they were stored appropriately and do not show signs of physical deterioration. The term voluntary use applies to employees who choose to wear an N95 respirator voluntarily, outside of situations where it is required as PPE for their work, are engaging in voluntary use.

Proper storage

Keep respirators their original packaging and in a cool dry area away from heat sources, moisture, or direct sunlight.

Visual Inspection Before Use

  • Do not use the respirator if the mask appears damaged, torn, distorted or misshapen
  • Do not use if the straps appear stretched, loose, brittle, or show wear and tear.
  • Ensure mask should fit securely on the user’s face, no gaps around edge between mask and face

User seal check procedure

  1. Cover the respirator with the palms of your hands
  2. Exhale strongly

If air escapes or leaks from the edges of the respirator, the seal is not proper and it won't perform effectively. Users may readjust and repeat the seal check. If a passing seal check is not achieved, the respirator should be discarded..
