Hazardous Chemical Waste Pick-Ups

The UCLA Hazardous Waste Program is closed during all university observed holidays.

The hazardous chemical waste pick up is a routine service provided for research laboratories on UCLA campus. The schedule below is the list of days and pick-up times for the associated buildings.  If your building is not listed below, please email: hazardousmaterials@ehs.ucla.ed

  • We accept only routine waste:
  • The listed pick-ups are for routinely generated chemical waste only from research laboratories. Call the Hazardous Waste Line at (310) 206-1887 with any questions.

    Young Hall:
The first half of the pickup is for solvent bulking only. Non-bulk containers must be brought down during the second half of the pick-up.

  • Waste NOT Accepted:
  • Biological Hazardous Waste and Radioactive Hazardous Waste is NOT picked up by the Hazardous Waste Team

Medical wastes  (pathological or biohazard) (310) 794-7745

    Radioactive wastes (310) 825-5396

    Controlled substances

Universal Waste - batteries, E-waste, ink and toner, fluorescent light blubs

  • How to transport your chemicals to pick-up location
  • Select your cart:  Use a heavy-duty cart and secondary containment (do not carry containers).
Pick a route: Do not transport materials on public streets. Follow the hazardous waste pick-up schedule for your building date and time.
Training: All personnel transporting chemical waste must be trained on the hazards of chemical waste, safe handling techniques, and procedures to follow in the event of a spill.
Stay with youR waste: Never leave hazardous waste unattended in any public area or at the pick-up location. Waste must be given directly to EH&S personnel
What to wear: Wear appropriate lab attire (long pants, closed-toe shoes). Bring personal protective equipment (safety glasses, lab coats, and appropriate gloves) in case there is a spill.

Note: PPE should not be worn outside of the lab to the pick-up, but should be available to be worn in the event of a chemical spill.
  • Preparing Material
  • Label all hazardous chemical waste using a WASTe tag.

        -  place the label in a clear envelope pouch (you can request them from our staff at pick up)

        -  on the date you are dropping off your material label the outside of the clear envelope pouch with the date of drop off.

Segregate materials according to hazard classification for transportation. Each hazard class should have a separate secondary container

    Containers must be:

    -  free of exterior contamination

       -  chemically compatible with the material of the storage container.

Chemical Resistance Information For Bottles, Containers & Safety Cans

       -  container size should be suitable for the material stored

       -  container lid should be in good condition and the container should be sealed

       -  unaffected by leaking, rusting, or any other defects

    Liquids Waste Dry Waste
     -  partially filled. (at least 10% air space) -  double-bagged in transparent, sturdy bags and cannot have sharp or protruding edges.
    -  free of solids (i.e. fixed tissues)  -  taped or tied closed.

       Unknown Chemicals

          -   Require the generator to bring a University Recharge Order Request Form (p. 39) completed and signed to cover the costs of analysis.
