Hazardous Waste Pick-Ups

Applicable Buildings: Only buildings that are listed are allowed to drop off waste at the locations in which they are associated. Do NOT cross streets with waste. If your building is not listed below, please call the Hazardous Waste Line at (310) 206-1887 for pick-up times.

Routine Waste Only: The listed pick-ups are for routinely generated chemical waste only. Call the Hazardous Waste Line at (310) 206-1887 with any questions.

Young Hall: The first half of the pick up is for solvent bulking only. Non-bulk containers must be brought down during the second half of the pick-up.

Waste NOT Accepted: No medical wastes (pathological or biohazard) (310) 794-7745; no radioactive wastes (310) 825-5396; and no controlled substances will be accepted 310) 794-5143, (310) 794-1664 can be accepted at chemical waste pick up.

  • Transportation to pick-up location
  • Use a heavy duty cart and secondary containment (do not carry containers). Do not transport materials on public streets. Follow the hazardous waste pick-up schedule for your building date and time.

    • All personnel transporting chemical waste must be trained on the hazards of chemical waste, safe handling techniques and procedures to follow in the event of a spill.
    • Label all hazardous chemical waste using a WASTe tag.
    • Segregate materials according to hazard classification for transportation. Each hazard class should have a separate secondary container.
    • Hazardous waste can never be left unattended in any public area or at the pick-up location. Waste must be given directly to EH&S personnel.
    • Wear appropriate lab attire (long pants, closed-toe shoes). Bring personal protective equipment (safety glasses, lab coats, appropriate gloves) in case there is a spill. (Note: PPE should not be worn outside of the lab to the pick-up, but should be available to be worn in the event of a chemical spill.
  • Waste Disposal Information
  • Liquid waste must be:

    • free of exterior contamination
    • chemically compatible and the size should be suitable for the material stored.
    • in good condition with screw tops.
    • unaffected by leaking, rusting or any other defects.
    • partially filled. (at least 10% air space)

    Dry waste must be:

    • double-bagged in transparent, sturdy bags and cannot have sharp or protruding edges.
    • taped or tied closed.

    Unknown chemicals

    • require the generator to bring a University Recharge Order Request Form (p. 39) completed and signed to cover the costs of analysis.
